Root Restoration Repair

When gum tissue recedes, portions of the tooth root that are normally protected can become exposed. Over time, these exposed root surfaces may become sensitive, worn, damaged, or more vulnerable to decay. Root restoration repair is designed to help protect these areas, improve comfort, and support the long-term health of your teeth and gums.
At McKnight and Oliver Periodontics, Dr. McKnight and Dr. Oliver carefully evaluate the health of the tooth, root surface, surrounding gum tissue, and supporting bone to determine the most appropriate treatment for each patient.
Why Would a Tooth Root Need Repair?
Healthy gum tissue helps protect the roots of your teeth. When the gums recede, the root surface may become exposed. Gum recession can occur for several reasons, including periodontal disease, aggressive brushing, tooth position, natural anatomy, or other factors.
An exposed or damaged root may lead to:
- Sensitivity to hot, cold, or touch
- Increased risk of root decay
- Wear or notching near the gumline
- Changes in the appearance of the tooth
- Further irritation or damage to the surrounding gum tissue
Treating these areas can help protect the tooth and create a healthier environment for the gums. Depending on the extent of the recession and root damage, treatment may involve restoration of the damaged tooth surface, periodontal treatment, or a combination of approaches.
How Is Root Restoration Repair Treated?
Every situation is different. Before recommending treatment, Dr. McKnight or Dr. Oliver will examine the affected tooth and surrounding periodontal tissues to determine the cause and extent of the problem.
If part of the root surface has been damaged or lost, a tooth-colored restorative material may be used to repair and protect the area. In some situations, gum recession is also present and periodontal treatment may be recommended to improve coverage and protection of the exposed root.
For patients with significant gum recession, a gum graft or another root coverage procedure may be appropriate. These procedures are designed to cover exposed roots, help protect vulnerable tooth surfaces, and reduce the risk of additional recession.
When both the tooth surface and gum tissue have been affected, your periodontist may coordinate treatment with your general or restorative dentist to determine the best sequence of care.
Benefits of Treating Exposed or Damaged Roots
Addressing root surface damage can help:
- Reduce tooth sensitivity
- Protect vulnerable root surfaces
- Lower the risk of additional wear or decay
- Support healthier gum tissue
- Improve the appearance of the gumline and tooth
- Preserve the natural tooth whenever possible
Early evaluation is especially important because gum recession and root surface damage can progress gradually and may not initially cause significant discomfort.
